Calder Cup final set....

Postby KnightHawk » Fri Jun 06, 2014 12:48 pm

...and it features 2 teams that could not be any further away from each other.

Texas Stars (Cedar Rapids, TX) (about 90 minutes north east of San Antonio), and the St. John's IceCaps (St. John's, NL).

Obviously, the series is going 2-3-2. There is a LOT of downtime between games 3 and 4.
Game 3 is on Wednesday, June 11th.
Game 4 is on Monday, June 16th!

Mile One Centre must be booked solid between games 3 and 4.

Just had a look on the site:

I guess not.

That only lists publicly-ticketed events.

Caught up in a situation: SJSE says it can't break contract to address potential scheduling issue for IceCaps

Key portion:

The next three contests would be at the home of Eastern Conference champion, and if that happens to be St. John’s, the dates the IceCaps prefer are already booked. That’s because the Canadian Anaesthesiologists Society’s (CAS) annual meeting and trade show is being held at Mile One Friday, June 13 to Monday, June 16. Not only are the IceCaps unable to play on those dates, but Thursday is out to allow for set-up of the trade show. And Sparkes says Wednesday night, June 11 is also unavailable since Mile One needs that time to do required preliminary work

So Mile One says the best it can offer the IceCaps is a late Wednesday afternoon start time - probably 6 p.m. - for Game 3, with Games 4 and 5 on the following Monday and Tuesday nights after a four-day break.

“We are contractually obligated to have the building ready to turn over to the trade show people at 8 a.m. Thursday,” said Sparkes.

The CAS convention was booked in 2009.

I knew there had to be SOME reason why they couldn't play between Thursday and Sunday.

There is.

Thanks for the clarification, Jason Cormier. :)

Not that I care at all about a five-day break in the Calder Cup Final, but I can't get past this. Is Mile One - or St. John's - in such demand as a conference venue that the contract had to be signed five years in advance?

Major conferences are often booked that far in advance. It's the organization, not the host.

isn't there like something wrong when the NHL season end before the AHL season end?

No. For as long as I can remember, the AHL playoffs usually end after the NHL playoffs.

Speaking of that, Texas and St. John's are playing game 5 as I write this. Texas is up 3 games to 1.

Game 5 is going to OT AGAIN. 3 games on the Rock that they have played....3 times they have gone to OT.

We could have a winner tonight.

Stay tuned....
